Wow, leave it to liberals to hijack a man’s legacy with an outright lie and a cartoon done in poor taste. The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence posted a “cartoon” (right) to Facebook today saying, “Don’t worry Mr. President. We are not done yet. #gunviolence#gunsense #gunsafety”

Regardless of your politics, there were some things Kennedy got right. For all his faults, he was not an evil man and not since Reagan have we had a president who preached that we shouldn’t be looking for a government handout but, looking to do our best for our country. But on the issue of guns, I can find only one verifiable quote from Kennedy on short notice. It appeared, of all places, in Guns Magazine.

Kennedy’s statement, Know Your Lawmakers, Guns, April 1960, p. 4 (1960): “By calling attention to ‘a well regulated militia,’ the ‘security’ of the nation, and the right of each citizen ‘to keep and bear arms,’ our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny which gave rise to the Second Amendment will ever be a major danger to our nation, the Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason I believe the Second Amendment will always be important.”

By today’s standards, Kennedy would be considered a Tea Party “terrorist” with respect to the issue of guns.
