After ATL incident, Hank Johnson wants to ban loaded guns at airportsoutside airport security | Political Insider blog

WASHINGTON — In response to the recent perfectly legal brandishing of a loaded AR-15 in Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Lithonia, introduced a bill today to extend airport gun bans outside security.

The Airport Security Act would allow gun owners to carry unloaded firearms in a locked case, while banning loaded weapons in the airport’s non-secure areas.

Sadly, this was predictable. Open carry should not be a criminal offense and it really shouldn’t be an issue. But, there are times that our “advocates” are doing nothing more than poking the bear and scaring the sheep into demanding that their shepherds do something about “crazy gun nuts.” The result is not always positive. In this case, we can thank Jim Cooley for being the latest attention whore to incite hysteria among the hoplophobes to the point they enact yet another gun ban.

Folks, there are people who carry openly all the time without issue. Some of them are cops. There are even concealed handgun license holders who occasionally make it all the way into a restaurant in non-open carry locations before they realize they’ve forgotten to toss their concealment garment back on. The the incidents go entirely unnoticed and don’t often result in man with a gun calls. Why? Because they are people conducting themselves normally and simply going about their business rather than pacing around trying to get attention.

Open carry will finally be legal in Texas as of January 1. Hopefully, folks will exercise that right responsibly. It will initially lead to some exciting times I am sure. But so long as we don’t have any more Jim Cooley’s, life will move on and we’ll get to enjoy the return of freedoms we never should have lost.
