Walther PPX review


During our last show, I mentioned I’d had the chance to spend some quality time with the Walther PPX. The PPX is Walther’s “budget” or “entry-level,” full-size pistol. Unlike it’s more expensive Walther stable mates, it is slide-cocking and hammer-fired, with a short double-action-only trigger stroke reminiscent of HK’s Law Enforcement Modification (LEM) except that it lacks double-strike capability normally associated with DA/DAO triggers. The PPX is a full-size, clunky-looking pistol that might remind you of a Hi-Point. In fact, Joe Grine, of The Truth About Guns, went so far as to say he thought it was a “freakin’ Hi-Point,” at first glance. I can’t say I blame him.

When you see it next to a Glock 17, the PPX’s bulk is quite noticeable. The slide is very tall, giving the gun a very high bore-axis. A high bore-axis contributes to more felt recoil and longer recovery times between shots if all other variables are equal. In addition to resembling a large metallic brick, the PPX’s slide construction is reminiscent of early SigSauer P-series pistols. It has a breech-block containing the extractor, firing-pin, and firing-pin safety plunger that is secured to the slide via transverse roll-pin. The PPX manual makes no mention of servicing these components beyond the external application of a drop of lubricating oil. Walther apparently does not plan for PPX owners to do much in the way of shooting, let alone maintenance on their guns.

 

 

 

 

The grip, in spite of appearances to the contrary, fits the hand well and houses a 16-round magazine. The “hump” actually fills your palm and the texture provides good traction without being rough. Unlike the P99 and PPQ, the PPX does not offer anything in the way of adjustments of the grip size/circumference for individual users. Its grip is one size fits most in no small part because this gun is built to meet a price point below its stable mates at Walther. Specifically, the P99 and PPQ. One adjustable feature the PPX does offer is a user reversible magazine catch. The slide stop lever is easy to reach with the dominant thumb for right handed shooters and South-paws, with a little effort, could manipulate it with their index finger. The take-down lever works in a manner similar to Sigs, M&Ps, and other pistols in that one must lock the slide to the rear, turn the take-down lever clock wise, and then release the slide to remove it from the gun.

As mentioned earlier, the PPX is hammer fired with a DAO trigger. There is no decocker or manual safety. It functions similarly to Hechler & Koch’s “Law Enforcement Modification” (LEM) with a two-piece hammer but, it’s not a true DA/DAO trigger. After the hammer falls, the trigger cannot cock the hammer or trip the sear. The hammer must be cocked by the slide and the trigger bar itself serves as the disconnector for semi-automatic operation. Those oddities aside, the benefit of this system for the shooter is a consistent trigger stroke from the first shot to the last. The trigger moves smoothly to the rear with minimal effort though the pre-travel stage where you meet a stated 6.5lbs of resistance necessary to engage the sear. Trigger movement through sear engagement to hammer release represents less than an 1/16th-inch of travel with over-travel being another 1/8th inch or so after the break. To reset the trigger, you need only allow your finger to move forward 3/8ths-inch but, you can clearly feel the trigger catch the link to back on the sear and fire again quickly.

Another oddity I noticed with this pistol is the barrel assembly. I specifically call it an assembly because unlike most pistol barrels machined from a single forging, it’s a three piece unit. Yes, three separate pieces. The largest is bore itself that does seem to be turned from a forged barrel blank. The second piece appears to be a metal injection molded, or possibly cast, shroud around the chamber area that makes up the barrel hood as well as upper/lower lugs. And finally, there’s a feed ramp that may be a stamping, fitted to the lip of the aforementioned shroud. How these pieces are affixed to each other isn’t really clear. They may be press fit and/or soldered but, I honestly can’t tell. TTAG, Joe Grine, asked Walther about this and they indicated that they employed this design because one-piece barrels tend to deform. The implication, it would seem, is that the one piece barrels that nearly everyone else uses are somehow inferior. I don’t know that I buy their argument as they don’t seem to apply it to the more expensive P99 or PPQ.

The copy of the PPX I’ve worked with has less than 2000 rounds through it. In that time, firing, extraction, and ejection have been reliable. Feeding it became a problem that I’ll expand on shortly. Accuracy good enough to hit a golf ball at 30 yards and ding a steel IPSC target out to 200 yards. Sights are crisp and easy to see. Being a 9mm, recoil isn’t significant but, the high bore-axis means it doesn’t shoot as flat a Glock 17, Smith M&P, or even a Springfield XD. Overall, the shooting experience is not a bad one. However, overall construction of the gun does not contribute to it’s longevity and that brings us to the feeding issue. With the magazine seated, the gun has thus far fed reliably. The problem we ran into on our most recent outing with the gun however, was that seating the magazine\ became a problem. What we found was that back wall of the magazine well is not a solid wall. It has three voids in it that are bisected by a ridge running down the center, forming a spine of sorts. This ridge developed a burr that imp20140509_231727eded the removal of a spent magazine and insertion of a new one. In an attempt to finish our workout for the day, we tried using a knife to scrape away this burr but, each new magazine threatened to raise another burr.

 

At the end of the day, the PPX is very much a “full-size” pistol. It is built to be cheap and it shows. Not quite as cheap as a Hi Point but, corners were obviously cut to meet a price point and the material of the magazine well is a corner cut in the wrong place. Walther didn’t build the PPX to be maintained beyond basic field stripping by the owner. And if you like the white dots in the factory sights, do not allow Gun Scrubber or any common gun solvent to touch the sights. Simply put, I don’t expect to see this gun “getting wood” in a major IDPA match or otherwise surviving a high volume class in which the owner might put over 1000 rounds through the gun in a weekend. This is a gun meant to be purchased, shot a few times for the sake of familiarity, and then put into storage with a hope it will never have to be used in anger. But at $450 retail, it’s still not all that cheap and to me, better options can be had for the same price or less on the used gun market.

Asked about the mental health aspects of guns, Clinton said “I think we’ve got to rein in what has become a almost article faith that anybody can have a gun, anywhere, anytime. I don’t believe that is in the best interest of the vast majority of people.”

And so it begins. Hillary is setting up her campaign platform. As was the case when her husband ran for office, guns will be front and center as the boogeyman dejour. Though I am not happy about it, I think she has a very real shot at being the next POTUS and one who may heavily influence the right to bear arms in ways that will make Barack Obama look like an addled school boy. Condoleeza Rice would make a far better choice for our country but, she is clearly not interested in seeking office…Those who really are qualified and really would have the nation’s best interests at heart never are.

Detroit woman wounded in shootout with would-be robbers | News – Home

“If I wouldn’t have had my gun I would be dead today,” she said.

It was late Saturday night when she arrived home after working a double shift. She saw two men moving closer to her as she was about to get out of her car. Before she got out, she put her .45 caliber handgun in her pocket.

“He said, ‘Don’t pull it,’ and he shot immediately,'” said Ainsworth.She was hit three times in the side and once in the hand. It was not her shooting hand.

“I said, ‘You mother (expletive),’ and pulled out my gun and started shooting. One, he was right in the middle of the street. The other one was right here on the side of the street,” she said.

Thanks to “The Well Armed Woman” for posting this on Facebook. Paris Ainsworth apparently isn’t foolish enough to follow advice from the likes of Joe Biden, The President, or Michael Bloomberg. By the sound of it, she never even got the chance to comply with her attacker’s request before he started shooting her. Even after being wounded, she stayed in the fight and returned fire.

Folks, THIS is why continue to advocate an armed citizenry. You will not be given a chance to call 911 BEFORE a problem arises. Chances are, like Paris, you will have the rest of your life to solve that problem once the fecal matter hits the spinning impeller. Deal with it.

Joseph Steinberg of Forbes Magazine gets it right on smart guns

Joseph Steinberg of Forbes Magazine, and the editors therein, clearly “get it.”  In his recent article, “Why You Should Be Concerned About The New ‘Smart Guns’ Whether You Love Or Hate Guns,” Steinberg lays out issues brought to the table by Smart Gun technology. The issues are not to be dismissed.

“1. Electronic devices require a power source, and smart guns are no exception. Without electricity they cannot be fired. Someone intent on using a firearm for home defense could find herself in serious danger if she drew a weapon on an armed intruder only to find that its batteries are drained. In general, it is not ideal to add a requirement for power to devices utilized in cases of emergency that did not need electricity previously. How many fire codes allow fire extinguishers that require a battery to operate? Before smartguns can be deemed reliable, therefore, they must incorporate countermeasures to address this issue. Simply warning users of low batteries may be insufficient, as many gun owners who do not carry their weapons with them keep their guns locked up, do not check them regularly, and might not see such warnings until it is too late.

2. Computers malfunction, and authentication technology is not perfect. Lawfully armed citizens protecting themselves and/or their families could be killed if their weapons malfunction during a home invasion or attempted rape. While some have argued that conventional semi-automatic handguns also periodically jam, smartguns add a whole new dimension of failure possibilities. Furthermore, technical problems typically take far longer to correct than firearm failures: trained users can often unjam a semi-automatic in a matter of seconds, but even experts cannot normally hard-reboot a malfunctioning piece of electronics that fast. One shudders to consider the possible tragedy if a policeman had to reboot his handgun, or had problems authenticating, during an altercation with an active shooter.

3. At least one smartgun that has entered the marketplace requires the owner to wear a special watch; the gun will only fire if it is within a short distance of the watch. While such a scheme may afford some level of protection in certain scenarios, it might do little in others; the “watch approach” would seemingly not prevent a criminal from grabbing someone’s weapon and shooting him at point blank range (as long as the gun was always near the watch), or stop a crook from stealing both the watch and the gun. Requiring a user to possess two items instead of just one is generally, not on its own, considered a major improvement to authentication. Requiring a PIN number to be entered on the watch in order to fire the gun addresses that issue – but, also introduces a risk that the legitimate user will be unable to quickly use the weapon in case of an emergency. How well do people enter PIN numbers when they are under the extreme stress of fearing for their lives? What happens if during an emergency situation a policewoman needs to use another officer’s gun?

4. Some upcoming smartgun models use biometrics to authenticate users, but biometrics take time to process and are often inaccurate – especially when a user is under duress – as is likely going to be the case in any situation in which he needs to brandish a gun. Furthermore, fingerprint readers and other forms of biometric analyzers are prone to error when people sweat profusely, shake, or are bloodied. Failures to authenticate legitimate users could lead to innocent people being killed when defending their families. Of course, there is also concern that if a crook stole a gun that relied on fingerprint authentication he might be able to lift the necessary fingerprints from all over the weapon, a problem that I described in an earlier article with regard to fingerprint-based smartphone authentication.

5. As I described in another previous article, smartguns may be susceptible to government tracking or jamming. How hard would it be for the government to require manufacturers to surreptitiously include in computer-enhanced weapons some circuitry that would allow law enforcement to track – or even to disable – the weapons? Before dismissing such a fear as silly paranoia, consider that the US government is alleged to have secretly installed malware onto thousands of networks and placed spy chips into computers, it has admitted to spying on its own citizens, is believed to have prohibited technology companies from divulging its spying on US citizens, and is known to have lost track of weapons whose locations it intended to monitor. Should private citizens really be confident that such a government will not want to keep tabs on their guns? Are firearms really less worthy of being tracked than telephone records? (While tracking devices could theoretically be placed in non-smart weapons for short term tracking or for tracking at specific locations, the power source included on smart weapons enables much more robust tracking.)

6. Smartguns might be hackable! Even without embedded tracking or jamming technology, smart guns that rely on radio-frequency (i.e., wireless) transmissions – like the aforementioned gun-watch pair, for example – might be susceptible to remote jamming – not something that a law enforcement officer or law-abiding citizen would want to find out when a thug is threatening her with a weapon equipped with a jammer atop. Governments might gain the ability to disable people’s private weapons, and criminals might gain the ability to do so to police service weapons.

7. Any feature that prevents a gun from firing at anything that is not a specialized target – a feature some new “smart guns” are supposed to offer – might make the gun safer for home storage, but clearly eliminates a person’s ability to rely on it for self defense.

8. In some situations, smart guns could worsen gun safety. When incomplete safety features are introduced with fanfare, people have a habit of relying on them, creating a human vulnerability that leads to accidents. We see this in the information security world all the time: How people have downloaded software/games/music from unknown parties because they rely on anti-virus software to keep them safe? Likewise, when it comes to guns, haven’t we heard stories of firearm accidents that occurred when someone thought (and relied on the fact that) a “safety switch” was engaged when it was not? It remains to be seen as to whether people who have been told that smart guns cannot be fired by unauthorized parties rely on that promise and store, transport, or hold them in unsafe ways in which they would never even consider doing with a conventional firearm. Introducing safety features is smart only if the features either truly work 100% of the time, or if people are thoroughly conditioned not to rely on them – which is not going to happen if popular media outlets continue to portray smartguns as perfect, James Bond-like weapons.

9. Sometimes firearms need to be used by others. It is problematic, for example, for a policeman not to be able to fire his partner’s weapon if necessary. This means that the process of configuring smartguns in a law enforcement or military environment may not be simple – with the need for frequent updates to individual weapons creating possibilities of dangerous, if not deadly, errors. Enterprises use robust device management systems for a reason – and they do so even for objects far less dangerous than guns.

10. Firearms must be able to be disassembled in order to be cleaned and maintained. One of the principles of information security is that someone who has physical access to a machine can undermine its security. Smartgun manufacturers need to show evidence that criminals who steal smartguns cannot modify them to work with the smart technology removed or disabled (or that preventing any components from being accessed that are accessible in conventional weapons will not impact the durability of the weapons).”

You can read the rest of his article here. None of these issues are news to those of us who have had to use guns in defense of ourselves or others. But not everyone understands that adding technology is not always the answer to all problems. Then again, we’re talking about politicians making policy and that’s not exactly a bastion of common sense or logic.

N.J. Democrat: We will reverse smart gun law if NRA plays ball | MSNBC

“If, in fact, the NRA will make a public commitment to not stand in the way of the manufacture, distribution or sale of any gun that is limited by technology to the use of only its owner,” Weinberg said, “then I will ask the New Jersey legislature to amend the law.”

You’ll forgive me if I don’t just bend over and open my cheeks. Politicians are all liars. I’m often surprised when Democrats who claim they’ll do anything supportive of the 2nd Amendment aren’t struck by lightning on the spot. But it get’s better as N.J. Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg says of the NRA, “whatever goalposts they set for you, they move them.” Ain’t that the pot calling the kettle, black.
