“The discussion over the debate to own a gun is just ridiculous. As Americans we have the right to bear arms and as humans the right to protect ourselves. I’m sure that the man who shot my husband did not have a gun permit. Criminals will always have guns. The rest of us legally obtain our gun permits.” – Lynne Russell

Chicago holiday violence: 9 killed, at least 47 wounded, but better than last year – The Washington Post

“It’s real simple,” he said at the conference. “Gun possessors are potential murderers. If they don’t learn a lesson for carrying the gun, they keep carrying the gun. They get into an argument, now instead of fighting, they shoot.” – Chicago Police Superintendent, Garry McCarthy

I beg to differ, chief. I’ve possessed guns all of my adult life. The lesson I learned is to stay the hell out of Chicago!

Chicago has been a hotbed of violence and gang activity since the days of Prohibition. This is nothing new. The city is built on corruption. It’s not even an issue of “sub-culture” as so many would like to believe. It’s Chicago, period.

Chicago’s violence is born out of social, economic, and even educational difficiencies that are much harder to address than simply blaming guns as so many politicians are apt to do. This latest weekend of violence will surely lead to another call for stricter gun control but, Chicago had all but banned the possession of guns way back in 1974. In the 40 years that followed, their murder rate still managed to climb higher in the long run.

Only as a result of recent SCOTUS rulings are Chicago residence allowed to own firearms again legally and even then, few do. Chicago’s laws remain some of the tightest in the country. And yet, the violence continues while innocent and law abiding folks are left defenseless.
