A few weeks back, Springfield Armory issued a safety recall of the 3.3 XD-S series of pistols. Not all of the pistols, just those within a specific range of serial numbers. Specifically, 3.3 XD-S™ 9mm pistols – serial numbers between XS900000 and XS938700 and 3.3 XD-S™ .45ACP pistols – serial numbers between XS500000 and XS686300.
As of Friday however, Springfield Armory issued a revisio/update in which they indicated the original 30-day turnaround time might not be sufficient to resolve the issues surrounding the fine Croatian craftsmanship of the XD-S line. According to the latest notice, they are currently testing upgrade solutions and will post an update no later than October 4th.
We originally estimated a 30-day turn-around time, but it has unfortunately taken longer to develop and identify an upgrade solution. Please know that we are continuing to test potential upgrade solutions at this time and we have been doing so since we became aware of this issue. This testing is nearing completion and we will post any new updates as soon as we have identified a final upgrade solution. We will post our next update no later than Friday, October 4, and we will communicate immediately if a final solution is identified prior to that date. We wish that we could provide you with a specific return date at this time, but we are unfortunately unable to do so. Upgrades will be completed on a “first come / first served” basis.
So what does this mean? Well, it means that if you’ve already sent your gun to Springfield Armory, it might be a while before you get it back and as of today. Springfield Armory can’t tell you when you’ll get your gun back. I’m not going to tell you that you should have purchased some other gun because this really could have happened with any manufacturer. However, if your XD-S was the only gun you owned, you’ve been left high and dry for the time being with no gun and no clue when you’ll get it back. That’s not cool.
Why it’s taking so long:
We pledge to you that we are working as fast as we can, and have greatly increased our staff and number of shifts to ensure that we are leveraging every hour in the day.
We understand that our decision to announce a voluntary safety recall without a final solution in place has caused confusion and frustration. We sincerely apologize for that inconvenience. However, your safety is, and always has been, our paramount concern. And that is why we decided to issue the voluntary safety recall before we had a guaranteed upgrade solution in place.
Our decision not to wait was based on putting you, our customer, first. Some companies build in several weeks of lead time before announcing their recalls. But, we didn’t feel that was the most responsible approach in this case since our priority is your safety.
Please know that we are committed to resolving this matter as quickly as possible and we are committed to ensuring that you will be very pleased with your upgraded 3.3 XD-S™. As a reminder, do not use your 3.3 XD-S™ until the upgrade has been performed.
To Springfield’s credit, they really have acted out of an abundance of caution. It’s a pain in the butt and I’m sure a source of consternation however, it would have been irresponsible for them to recognize a dangerous problem and not say anything. Imagine if you will, how we might have reacted had Springfield known about this and not said anything when news reports came in of guns going bang just because you racked the slide.

It’s a damned shame that the United States Senate’s website can’t correctly summarize the US Constitution without a hint of political bias. Under the link for the US Constitution, the following quote appears next to the 2nd Amendment.
Whether this provision protects the individual’s right to own firearms or whether it deals only with the collective right of the people to arm and maintain a militia has long been debated.
Never mind the fact that the United States Supreme Court’s ruling settled this “debate” in 2008 and reaffirmed an individual right to keep and bear arms in 2010.

Obama Administration Signs United Nations Arms Trade Treaty Fairfax, Va. – Today, Secretary of State John Kerry signed the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty on behalf of the Obama administration. The National Rifle Association strongly opposes this treaty, which is a clear violation of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. “The Obama administration is once again demonstrating its contempt for our fundamental, individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. “This treaty threatens individual firearm ownership with an invasive registration scheme. The NRA will continue working with the United States Senate to oppose ratification of the ATT.” A bipartisan majority of the U.S. Senate is already on record in opposition to ratification of the ATT. On March 23, the Senate adopted an amendment to its FY 2014 Budget Resolution, offered by Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), that establishes a deficit-neutral fund for “the purpose of preventing the United States from entering into the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.” This amendment is in addition to the previous efforts of Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) to pass concurrent resolutions opposing the treaty in their respective chambers. Notably, the ATT includes “small arms and light weapons” within its scope, which covers firearms owned by law-abiding citizens. Further, the treaty urges recordkeeping of end users, directing importing countries to provide information to an exporting country regarding arms transfers, including “end use or end user documentation” for a “minimum of ten years.” Each country is to “take measures, pursuant to its national laws, to regulate brokering taking place under its jurisdiction for conventional arms.” Data kept on the end users of imported firearms is a de-facto registry of law-abiding firearms owners, which is a violation of federal law. Even worse, the ATT could be construed to require such a registry to be made available to foreign governments. “These are blatant attacks on the constitutional rights and liberties of every law-abiding American. The NRA will continue to fight this assault on our fundamental freedom,” concluded Cox. -NRA-

Time will tell how long it lasts but, like Starbucks in 2010, both McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts have stated they will abide by the laws of the local jurisdictions of their stores. Business Insider asked the companies for statements of their firearms policies following the Starbucks fiasco last week. Neither is known for being particularly “pro-gun” and I don’t expect either of them to start sponsoring shooters or matches anytime soon. However, as was the case with Starbucks, it’s a bold statement to say, “we’re going to follow the law” rather than publicly endorsing one side or the other in the current political environment.
