Jackson: Gun owner unarmed, unwelcome in Maryland — Tampa Tribune

The officer came back to John. “You’re a liar. You’re lying to me. Your family says you have it. Where is the gun? Tell me where it is and we can resolve this right now.”

Of course, John couldn’t show him what didn’t exist, but Kally’s failure to corroborate John’s account, the officer would tell them later, was the probable cause that allowed him to summon backup — three marked cars joined the lineup along the I-95 shoulder — and empty the Expedition of riders, luggage, Christmas gifts, laundry bags; to pat down Kally and Yianni; to explore the engine compartment and probe inside door panels; and to separate and isolate the Filippidises in the back seats of the patrol cars.

Ninety minutes later, or maybe it was two hours — “It felt like forever,” Kally says — no weapon found and their possessions repacked, the episode ended … with the officer writing out a warning.

Every now and then, you hear of a traffic stop gone wrong that makes your blood boil. The story of John Filippidis is just such a case. I really want to side with the cops but, from the way this story is told, this started out as profiling (a late model SUV with Florida plates on I95 with five occupants driving the speed limit through Maryland…Must be a car full of drug mules, let’s follow them until they do something to justify pulling them over) and then it turned into full on hoplophobia by an overzealous cop. At least that’s the narrative here. I’d really be interested in seeing dash or body cam footage if it exists. It would go a long way toward settling the question of what happened. The officer may indeed have had PC for the search but, soft skills go a long way in maintain public trust with police officers versus perpetuation of the “us versus them” mentality on both sides. I know cops that I’d glady step in to help if I saw them in need. But there are some I’d also gleefully watch burn on the side of the road. I’ll reserve judgement in this case until all the facts are in.

Open carry leads a mall to post 30.06 notice, enforcement of ban against all carrying of firearms.

After a man’s arrest for carrying a rifle in public, Parkdale Mall has posted signs prohibiting concealed firearms at entrances, a reinforcement of the company’s longtime policy that nonetheless is catching some flak.

Derek Poe, 26, owner of Golden Triangle Tactical in the mall, had an AR-15 rifle seized by police Dec. 28 after police received calls from shoppers who said they were “terrified” at the sight of a man carrying a rifle through the mall.

via Mall posts signs barring guns after rifle incident – Beaumont Enterprise.

We can vote with our feet and refuse to patronize the mall but, being private property, it’s their right to refuse entry to anyone for any reason. This is a concern for all of us and this is not mean to throw the Open Carry movement under a bus but, as we’ve said time and time again, attempts to “educate” the public don’t always result in education. It’s one thing to do it on a public street, it becomes an entirely different problem on private property.

New Gun Laws Had No Impact on Arapahoe HS Shooting but, an armed responder on campus did.

“So things like universal background checks, I think they are going to make us safer, but in this specific case aren’t going to make a difference at all,” said Hickenlooper. via The Colorado Observer.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and others of his ilk have had to publicly admit something freedom advocates have said all along…Gun control doesn’t work to prevent tragedies like the Arapahoe High School shooting. In fact, economists Steve Levitt (co-author of Freakonomics) and John Lott (author of More Guns, Less Crime), have both consistently noted none of the gun control measures pushed by the left will do anything to stop crime or prevent mass shootings. Even the President has had to admit this, albeit with his usual spin saying, “As a nation, we can’t stop every act of violence…” but, still decreeing, “…, we must make a change.” As it happens, changes have been made that actually do help and none of them have anything to do with gun control.

Though left-leaning outlets like CNN have consistently failed to report it, the official press releases from the school district and responding agencies all indicate that this tragedy ended abruptly when the bad guy was confronted by an armed resource officer assigned to the Arapahoe High School campus. When Wayne La Pierre and the NRA suggested this very thing following the Sandy Hook massacre, the left predictably went into overdrive saying it was absolutely crazy and spinning the suggestion into arming teachers which they said was even more insane.

Well, it would seem that neither idea, that of an armed-responder on campus nor the armed-teacher, is quite as crazy as the left would have you believe.  Because there was an armed staff member on campus, the entire Arapahoe High School shooting was over in 80 seconds. When met with an armed response, the shooter turned the gun on himself. News reports all indicate the police responded “within minutes” but, the official word is “minutes” means 14 minutes to be exact. The shooting had been over for twelve minutes before the first officers arrived. As the old saying goes, “when seconds count, the police are just minutes away.” Still, Hickenlooper insists that even though the new gun control laws didn’t work this time, they’ll work eventually.

4 CNN Liberals Walk into a Bar… and Defend Gun Rights?: PJMedia.com

I don’t know about global warming but, there definitely seems to be a polar shift in progress. A couple month’s ago, Anthony Bourdain penned a blog post in which he actually voiced support for the 2nd Amendment. He still had a lefty way of looking at it but, at least it wasn’t the typical liberal drivel calling for banning of all guns or demonizing gun owners for actions of mad men. And now, he has been joined by three CNN cohorts…

“Those people who you were out shooting with — those were law-abiding citizens who were trained for guns and respect them. They’re not the people going into malls and shooting people. So there are two different ways to look at this. Yes, it’s mental health. But for the most part the people who have guns and who carry AR-15s, most of them are not shooting up people.”

No, their positions are not perfect. They haven’t come full circle to the position that the right “shall not be infringed” but, they have come a very long way from being part of the Brady Bunch. It would appear, there is hope.
