As the saying goes, “When second count, the police are just minutes away.” Now cue some idiot saying he shouldn’t have had a gun and just waited for the police to get there. THIS is why we own guns and there shouldn’t be a restriction on what we get to own. You don’t know who’s try to enter your home or what it will take to shut them down.

Graphic machete attack painfully illustrates the speed and nature of true violence and why we carry guns

My immediate thought is THIS IS WHY I CARRY A GUN! Cliché, yes? Doesn’t mean it’s an invalid observation or opinion. Take note that this machete attack begins and ends in less than 60 seconds. Where this happened is largely unimportant. You name the major city, this could just as easily be anywhere USA and the results would be similar.

When faced with violence, you can get “lucky” and survive on the mercy/ineptitude of the aggressor. We are seeing just that in this video as the manager of a cybercafe tries to stop a robbery with what looks like a broomstick. He falls to the ground because he loses his balance and his stick after taking a half-hearted swing at the first attacker. Still, the hits/cuts, don’t seem to be incapacitating for the defender in the moment of the attack. That’s something to note in terms of mindset. We tell people all the time, just because your cut, hit, or shot, doesn’t mean you’re done. This man very nearly was done because he stopped fighting almost as soon as he hit the first attacker. People often lose fights and die simply because they give up the moment pain is inflicted upon them. Of course, it might have been better to bring something more than a broomstick to that fight too…See thought number one on this subject.

Also note the complete lack of interest/aid from bystanders. Only one or two people react to what’s going on and they quickly return to minding their own business…Putting their faces back in their screens as if nothing happened while a man lay bleeding on the floor. Though we often hear of bystanders stepping in, in the grand scheme of things, it’s a rare event. How many IHOP robberies have we heard of here in Houston where most patrons simply watched the robbery happen? Don’t take that as necessarily faulting those people. The fact is, it is often better to simply be a good witness. If you want to go home at night, that is the often the preferred policy.

Last but not least, we NEVER see the police. When is there even time to make THAT call? The harsh reality is you are on your own. You cannot count on the kindness of strangers…The person who feels compelled to intercede on behalf of a stranger is a rare duck. And once again, when seconds count, the police are minutes away. Deal with it. Plan accordingly.

NRA-ILA | The Sheriff Who Dared to Ask For Help

If you’ve never heard of Sheriff David Clarke, you need to read this article over at the NRA’s ILA website. This man is the kind of sheriff we need in every county of every state. As sheriff, he has displayed far more intellectual honesty that just about any other elected official in the country.

Update: Everytown for Gun Safety video works as predicted for two women of “The View”

In our previous post, we mentioned that Everytown for Gun Safety’s new video was likely to have the exact opposite effect of what they intended. Well, Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy just proved the point. Neither apparently see the video as a clear call for gun control. In fact, they both indicate it reminds them of why women SHOULD own guns! Great job Mike and Shannon!

Everytown for Gun Safety makes a “pro-gun” video

You need to see this video before they realize their mistake. Michael Bloomberg and Shannon Watts have managed to make a video they think promotes the need for gun control. But an objective view of it would suggest it can just as easily be interpreted as the exact opposite, promoting gun ownership by women.

In this video, the presumably estranged husband/father is threatening “Mom” from outside the home. Mom calls 911 for help. in the time it takes 911 to answer and for her to explain why she needs help, “Dad” has kicked in the door and overpowered Mom, threatening to take the child. The police or any other help 911 MIGHT provide is no where to be seen. And while this video depicts a gun as the weapon of choice, there’s no reason to believe the result wouldn’t be the same if “Dad” were reduced to nothing more than a knife, bat, stick, plastic bag, or his bare hands.

The idea that “Mom” might be able to defend herself or her child apparently has never entered the minds of Everytown for Gun Safety. And it would seem they expect it to never enter the minds of anyone watching the video. They expect that anyone watching it will see that “clearly, if only this man didn’t have a gun, none of this would happen.” But suppose, for a moment, that Mom had a gun?

Might “Mom” have been able to yell, “Stay out! I have called the police and I will shoot you…” and mean it? Might that justifiable threat of deadly force have caused “Dad” or anyone else outside the home to reconsider entering forcibly, thus avoiding the loss of life or threat of injury for all parties entirely? And if Mom’s justifiable threat fails to dissuade Dad, having a gun provides a force multiplier that may give her the ability to stop Dad even if he brings his own gun. Still, the video perfectly illustrates something else we know about many similar scenarios. Calling 911 is fine when there is sufficient time for help to arrive but, as the saying goes, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
