Two uniformed NYPD officers were shot dead Saturday afternoon as they sat in their marked police car on a Brooklyn street corner — in what investigators believe was a crazed gunman’s ­assassination-style mission to avenge Eric Garner and Michael Brown.

This isn’t “revenge.” This was the cold-blooded murder of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu. There’s no justification for it. Regardless of how one feels about Garner, Brown, Rice, or anyone else, this is wrong and neither of these officers deserved this. No good can come of it and one can only hope this isn’t a sign of things to come.

Police haven’t said how the children died. But Asnicar said they’re examining several knives in the home that may have been the weapon used to kill the children.

Our hearts and prayers are with these children and their families. This sort of thing should never happen. But, even in a country where guns are all but banned, evil found a way and guns weren’t involved. It looks as if ordinary household knives were involved. Of course, countries like Britain would and have reacted to heinous crimes like this with calls to bans on everything short of a butter knife. Let’s hope the Australians don’t follow suit.

Court overturns Raul Rodriguez conviction

On Thursday, Houston’s First Court of Appeals said the jury’s instructions on the law on self-defense were so confusing that Rodriguez did not get a fair trial.

Some of you may remember Raul Rodriguez, a former Houston Firefighter. In 2012, he was convicted of killing his neighbor after recording a large portion of the confrontation with his own camera. That recording was part of the reason for his conviction as Rodriguez can be heard parroting the phrase, “I am in fear for my life,” over and over again while arguing with Kelly Danaher and Danaher’s father before Rodriguez ultimately shot the younger Danaher, a local school teacher. At the time of the incident, it was our collective opinion on the show that Rodriguez’s own video undermined his claim of self-defense. That opinion still stands.

It is highly likely that the Harris County District Attorney will appeal this ruling. In the meantime, Rodriguez may actually be able to request a bond for his release be set. By overturning this conviction, the appellate court is saying there was a mistake of law that is so egregious that it contributed to Rodriguez’s conviction. Specifically, they are saying the jury instructions were wrong or confusing. Time will tell but, it could be this case will have to go back to trial all over again.

The myth of over lubrication according to Larry Vickers

We have long had debates about gun maintenance. One of the biggest is the issue of lubrication. Especially with regard to how much lube is enough. Now, I have said many times, an oily gun is a happy gun. I didn’t make that up, it comes from old school Army guys who, sadly, are long dead. But, it is not an uncommon saying in the gun business. At any rate, Larry Vickers and the guys at TacTV have done a video to, as they put it, dispel the myth of over lubrication. It’s pretty convincing to me.

I will say that I tend to agree with Vickers on the points made here. Guns are best described as an “open” lubrication system. Your car’s engine has a closed loop system where by parts are constantly bathed in oil freshly pumped from the oil pan at the bottom of the engine in a wet sump system or an external tank in a dry sump system. Your car’s wheels/axles and various suspension/steering components however, are more akin to the gun. There’s no practical way to pump oil in and out of these areas. And so, typically, we grease the bearings in these areas of a car. Some shooters elect to use grease as lube with their guns for the same reason. Regardless of you choice of oil or grease, you can and should consult your owner’s manual for instructions on lubrication for your particular gun or consult a qualified armorer/gunsmith.
