Two of the suspects were found by police at the shop according to FOX 4’s Megan Brilley and two of the suspects fled and ran in a southeast direction. They ran for a few blocks and hid inside a home’s screened porch, knocking on the homeowner’s door to get in. Maj. Tennis said the homeowner called police and they were apprehended.

Robbing a gun store is just never a good idea. Unfortunately, an attempt to rob the She’s A Pistol gun store in Shawnee, Missouri has also cost one of the store owners his life. Jon Bieker, 44, husband to Rebecca Bieker died of injuries sustained in the ensuing shootout from a robbery attempt earlier today. Rebecca Bieker was also injured but, at last report, all four suspects, including two who fled the scene, were in custody.

The Shawnee Mayor, Jeff Meyers issued the following statement about the shooting:

“Today is a day of great sadness in our city. John and Becky are respected business owners in our community who do things the right way and are always willing to go out of their way to help others.

The simple fact is there is no place for this type of violence in Shawnee or any other city. We pride ourselves on being a safe and friendly city and today’s events, while unbelievably tragic, will not change that.

I want to pass along my condolences to the entire Bieker family. As they deal with this tremendous loss, I know our community stands ready to assist in any way that we can.”

We hope Mrs. Bieker recovers quickly. There’s nothing we can say to make up for the loss of her husband but, we still offer our condolences. We also hope the suspects are tried, convicted, and see justice served swiftly.

IWB Holster for the S&W 500 Magnum

image

No. I am not kidding.  Available now from Stealth Gear USA, the Onyx IWB holster is available to anyone who needs to shove 12 inches of thoroughly impractical steel into their pants. Now having said that, they do make more practical holsters for more sane choices in handguns.

Interesting new Glock optics mount from ALG Defense

image

Larry Vickers posted this on FB. He says it was developed per SOF request. Personally, it’s hard to imagine anyone using a dedicated optically sight pistol outside the IPSC/USPSA or other competitive shooting environments. Doesn’t mean it can’t happen. After all, the Army is using Aimpoint optics as the only sight on many M4s and we so those in IPSC for years before the military adopted them.

Correction: The rail shows above is in fact from ALG Defense (it was previously reported as being a Geissele product). I couldn’t see the ALG Insignia on my phone when I posted the photo yesterday based on Vicker’s announcement. I still think this is more game gear than anything else. Any holster would have to be specific to this rail and knowing what it costs some manufacturers to tool up for a new gun (as much as $20,000), I just don’t see anyone other than ALG Defense themselves or a smaller custom shop creating a rig for guns configured with this rail mounted.

Army Rejects M9A3 Proposal, Opts for New Pistol | Military.com

by late December, it was all over for Beretta’s engineering change proposal for the M9. The Army’s Configuration Control Board decided not to evaluate the M9A3, according to a source familiar with the decision.

The move clears the way for the Army to release a pending request for proposal that will launch the MHS competition.

Looks like Beretta is officially getting kicked off the government tit. I don’t blame them for trying and it really would have been a logical move by the Army and Department of Defense to adopt the M9A3 but, it sounds like the majority of people with stroke on such decisions are committed to going in a new direction. Chances are this will be some polymer framed pistol as that is the “modern” method of manufacturing pistols these days. Many polymer framed pistols allow a great deal more versatility with respect to fitting a wide variety of hands compared to traditionally manufactured pistols. Time will tell.

Activist goes through use of force training and sees the light when he shoots an “unarmed man”

Jarrett Maupin has been very vocal during the recent protests, leading marches on the Phoenix Police headquarters after officers shot an unarmed man who reportedly fought with them.

He agreed to go through a force on force training with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and went through three scenarios where you have to decide to shoot, or not to shoot.

via Activist critical of police undergoes use of force scenarios – FOX 10 News | fox10phoenix.com.

This isn’t meant to be a statement for or against cops. It’s not even really about cops as this is something that is relevant to any use of force encounter, armed or not, cop or not. But in all the recent furor about cops shooting people, the story and experience of Jarrett Maupin is especially relevant. Like so many others, he had an opinion. He “knew” that there was never a legitimate reason for a cop or anyone else to shoot an unarmed person. In response to a recent officer involved shooting, Maupin marched with others demanding the officer’s badge, gun, and job because they felt the shooting was unjustified. Why? Because the victim was unarmed. Maupin and the other protestors just knew that things would be different had they been in the officer’s position or if the man he shot had been white. To his credit, Maupin and Troy Hayden, a journalist with a Fox News affiliate in Phoenix, accepted an invitation to go through a force on force training session with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. It seems that as a result, they have seen the light and have a different perspective.

Among the takeaways here is that both men reacted similarly to the same stimulus. Men of different backgrounds, experiences, and (as much as I’m tired of this dead horse) different races reached the same conclusions. If you paid attention to the video, both shot an “unarmed” man. And for the record, chances are very high, said shooting would be ruled justified by both a police review board and a grand jury in the case of a civilian. Why? Because of the disparity of force (size and numbers of attackers as both men in that scenario started coming toward the “officer”) along with what both reasonably believed was motive, means, and manifested intent to do them harm even without a weapon in hand.

Another significant takeaway is something we talk about routinely…Things can and do go down hill, very quickly. We hear Maupin say these situations develop in 10-15 seconds but, the critical part happens faster than that. The unarmed man scenario goes from Maupin and Hayden asking questions to a shooting in less than 7 seconds for both of them. The guy claiming to be looking for his car goes from someone simply being evasive and non-compliant to Maupin and Hayden getting “shot” faster than either can react to the fact they’ve seen a gun. That’s real. And both are situations that are as relevant to civilians as they are to cops.

Finally, in the after action discussion portion of the video below, we hear Maupin say that he tried to shoot the suspect in the arm so he could subdue him. Folks, this is delusional fantasy that results from people watching too much TV and too many movies. The real world doesn’t work that way. Even an expert level shooter wouldn’t take the risk of missing or worse, wounding someone without actually stopping a deadly threat. The bad guy certainly isn’t going to launch bullets at you just to scare you or just to make it hurt a little bit. In a practical sense, if you’ve got time to make that decision, it can be readily argued you had time to use a non-lethal means. Again, shooting people or shooting at people is ALWAYS considered deadly force even if it is not necessarily your intent to kill them.
